TRIGLYCERIDES

Ask Leah!

What are TRIGLYCERIDES?

Triglycerides are the chemical form in which most fat exists in food and in your body.

Why is it that having too many triglycerides is harmful?

Elevated triglycerides may indicate coronary artery disease in some people and it also may be a signal of untreated diabetes.

What can I do to reduce my triglycerides?

  1. Reduce your weight if you are overweight
  2. Reduce the amount of fat - especially saturated fat - in your diet
  3. Be physically active for at least 30 minutes most days.
  4. Instead of saturated fats like butter use monounsaturated fats (like Mazola canola oil and Bertolli olive oil)
  5. Instead of high fat red meat eat more fish that have omega 3 fatty acids like tuna, salmon, sardines and herring.

This is general information only and should not replace advice or instructions given to you by your physician.
