The Scoop on Sugar

- Granulated or white sugar - from cane sugar, the most common kind - 1 tsp = 15 calories.
- Raw sugar/turbinado sugar - processed cane sugar.
- Brown sugar - white sugar combined with molasses - 1 tsp = 16 calories.
- Honey - 1 tsp = 21 calories.
- Fructose - found naturally in fruit and added to certain foods - 1 tsp = 12 calories.
- High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) - a combination of fructose and dextrose (sugar from corn) - 1 tsp = 17 calories.
Non-Caloric/Very Low-Calorie/Non-Nutritive Sweeteners
- Aspartame - (aka Nutrasweet, Equal) amino acid compound, cannot be used for baking.
- Saccharin - (aka Sweet 'N Low, Sweet 10) can be used for baking.
- Acesulfame K - (aka Sunette) - can be used for baking; may have slight aftertaste.
- Sucralose - (aka Splenda) - made from sugar, can be used in cooking and baking.
