Dining on the Road - How to Drive Down Cost and Calories

Ask Leah!

Are you a road warrior who spends more time in your car than at your desk?

Are you a soccer mom (or dad) who races from work to practice field or school to pick up and drop off kids?

Are you planning to drive to your family vacation this summer?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, perhaps you could use some help with ideas on how to avoid fast food in favor of more healthy options available at your local Ingles Supermarket. Instead of doing the drive-through for high fat and sodium breakfast foods, look for healthy alternatives and save money by making a quick stop at Ingles. Just carry with you some utensils and napkins and you'll be ready for an impromptu meal anywhere and anytime - even just sitting in your car!

Here are some easy "grab and go" ideas for breakfast:

  1. Tropicana Grab and Go Orange Juice
  2. Stonyfield Low Fat Yogurt Smoothies
  3. YoCrunch Yogurt
  4. Fresh Fruit (bananas, apples, oranges, grapes)
  5. Del Monte fruit cups
  6. Borden chunk cheeses
  7. Bagels and low-fat muffins from Ingles Bakery
  8. Sun·Maid raisins mixed with Laura Lynn dry roasted peanuts and cereal
  9. Meal replacement bars
  10. Slim Fast beverages

If you plan to be in the car for awhile, you may want to pack up a thermal container and ice packs to keep food cold and safe.

This is general information only and should not replace advice or instructions given to you by your physician.
