Shopping List for Cancer Prevention

April is cancer prevention month. It seems like every day we see something in the news about foods that may help reduce your risk of cancer. Here is some information gleaned from the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute about food that may help reduce your risk of certain types of cancer.
- Allium vegetables. Garlic, onion, leeks, scallions, shallots and chives. Contain components (especially garlic) that may prevent stomach and prostate cancer.
- Red wine. Contains polyphenols that have antioxidant properties. (Note: If you do not currently drink wine, this is not an endorsement to begin drinking.)
- Cruciferous vegetables. Broccoli, broccoli sprouts, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, watercress, bok choy, mustard greens, kale, cauliflower. Contain isiothiocynates - phytochemicals that prevent different types of cancer especially of the gastrointestinal and respiratory systems.
- Green Tea. Contains polyphenols that have antioxidant properties which may prevent skin cancer.
- White grapefruit, onions, carrots, mangoes, cantaloupe. Contain flavonoids that are antioxidants.
- Low-fat milk, yogurt and cheese. Calcium may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer.
- Tomato based products. Tomatoes, tomato sauce, red pasta sauce, pizza sauce and tomato juice. Contain lycopene, an antioxidant which may reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
