Healthy New Year!

Ask Leah!

It's that time of year again...the New Year. For many it's when they resolve to make a fresh start by quitting bad habits and adopting healthy ones. Here are some of my resolutions...

REST. The National Institutes of Health reports that most adults need 7 to 8 hours of sleep nightly. Teens and pregnant women in their first trimester need 9 hours or more each night. A lack of sleep makes it easier for you to get sick, slows your reaction time and impairs your judgement.

EAT or drink soy products. The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has endorsed the claim that eating 25 grams of soy protein a day along with a diet low in fat and cholesterol may help reduce your risk of heart disease. Tip: 2 cups of soymilk like Vitasoy® would give you half your daily amount.

SIP some tea. Both black and green tea...like your old favorite Lipton® contain antioxidants which help fight cancer.

ORDER less food when you dine out. Do you really need that dessert or that large portion of fries? Think about splitting entrees with your dining partner or at least taking food home with you. You'll save money and calories.

LISTEN more and talk less. You learn from listening - not talking. "Be a good listener. Your ears will never get you into trouble." - Frank Tyger

VEGETABLES. Work on getting more vegetables into your diet. Try for at least 3 servings each day. Stock your freezer with frozen vegetables that you can quickly add to sauces, soups and casseroles. Order salads and vegetable sides at restaurants. Keep carrots, celery and broccoli on hand to dip into salad dressing for nutritious snacking.

EXERCISE regularly. Step away from your computer and the TV! Burn calories by joining a gym or your local "Y" and going at least 3 times/week. Play with the kids. Work in the yard. Take a walk, ride your bike, do yoga, swim...just get MOVING!
