Dealing With Diabetes

So you have diabetes...you're not alone. Millions of Americans, adults and children, have this disease. Take the right steps to manage your disease.

Monitor your blood sugar.

Meet with a registered dietitian to help you learn how to count carbohydrates and eat balanced healthy meals.

Get regular medical care and take medication as directed.

Exercise on a regular basis.
Knowledge is power. Find out as much as you can about diabetes so you can take care of yourself. The payoff will be tremendous in terms of your long-term health. Here are some resources to keep you in the know:

Visit a doctor who specializes in diabetes, an endocrinologist.

Ask your doctor for a referral to a Registered Dietitian in your area or find one by contacting the American Dietetic Association (800-366-1655).

Contact the American Diabetes Association (800-232-3472) or the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (800-533-2873).

Check with your local hospital to see if they have a Diabetes Support Group to meet others in your area with diabetes.
