Six Shopping Tips to Lower Your Cholesterol
"Your cholesterol is too high, you need to change your eating habits." How many of us have heard those words from our doctor? Here are some recommendations from the American Heart Association (www.americanheart.org, "Menu Planning", accessed 2/16/01) so you can make better choices in your Ingles supermarket:
- Pick out lean meats, poultry and fish - Eat no more than 6 ounces (3 ounces = 1 deck of cards) each day. Eat fish twice a week.
- Eggs - Egg yolks have 213 mg of cholesterol. AHA recommends limiting daily cholesterol intake to 300 mg. Egg whites are not limited.
- Vegetables and Fruit - Stock up here! Eat 5 or more servings each day.
- Fat-Free skim milk and low-fat dairy products - 2-4 servings per day (depending on age).
- Breads, cereal, pasta and starchy vegetables - 6 or more servings each day.
- Fats, oil, nuts and sweets - A little goes a long way! use sparingly.
